Self-assess your language skills with our CEFR tool

Pipplet • 26 juin 2020

Self-assessment is a preliminary way for language learners to gauge their language skills against a standardized scale. In Europe, this scale of language standards is determined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, more widely known as CEFR.

While a self-assessment is just an indication, it could be used to better understand which skills you need to work on. Below, you can benefit from our free our self-assessment tool to get a sense of your own language skill level.

What is the CEFR and why is it important?

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages , or CEFR , is a reference document used in the context of language learning, specifically to help determine the language skill level of a person, on a global scale. The CEFR language scale is the most commonly referenced chart for designing language teaching programs and benchmarks.

There are 3 main levels of classification which are subdivided into 2 sub-levels each, forming a total of 6 levels. Each level of the framework corresponds to a practical skill, or more precisely, what the person is able to do using the language; whether that is introducing oneself, expressing broad ideas, having a structured and nuanced conversation, etc. This frame of reference better indicates a person's ability to use the language accurately in any given situation.

The CEFR language scale is important because it establishes a universally applicable classification system in all acceding countries and in any language. Therefore, language tests used in Europe must lead to a classification based on the CEFR levels .
