The Pros:
The tests are well-established.
You can find a lot of details on how the tests are structured and how to prepare for them. You can even take mock exams to test your abilities.
Educational institutions across the world use them.
Many universities accept (and sometimes require) qualifications in IELTS or TOEFL. Students wishing to study abroad find them particularly useful.
They offer test centres across the world.
You can sit the exams in many different locations, and can often take them online rather than by hand.
The Cons:
The test results can take a while to come through.
It usually takes around 5-10 days to get your results once you’ve completed the test, and longer to get hard copies of your results.
They focus on academic English.
Both tests focus on a very specific niche of the language. This means they often miss work-based and some practical knowledge.
Their test scales aren’t standardized.
Both the TOEFL and IELTS use their own grading scales. These are both different from the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). This can make it hard to get an understanding of how your ability truly compares to others’.
Of the several alternatives to the TOEFL and IELTS qualifications, we feel that Pipplet’s own online language assessment is the ideal fit for all students. The Pipplet Fluency Exam (FLEX) gives you the chance to test your oral and written language skills remotely and get a recognized certification.
We’ve based our FLEX tests on the CEFR standard, meaning you get an accurate way of comparing your abilities. The scenario-based questions test a range of skills, ensuring your proficiency is truly tested.
The focus of Pipplet’s language test is also on providing a service that can be accessed from anywhere. All you need is a computer with a working microphone. Our FLEX tests take just 30 minutes to complete, and you then get your results within 24 hours.
Along with your test score, you also get a detailed assessment of your strengths and weaknesses, and you can share your results on LinkedIn.
We believe that FLEX provides the ideal way of remotely testing your language skills - it’s a convenient and affordable alternative to the TOEFL and IELTS assessments
