GDPR: what has it meant for Pipplet?

How has GDPR impacted Pipplet so far and what’s next?

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the biggest change in data protection laws for 20 years, and was introduced to give control back to European citizens over their personal data. But how has it impacted Pipplet?

From the beginning

We created the company in 2015, a time when the protection of personal data was already a popular topic, attracting a lot of attention. This meant that right from the beginning of the Pipplet journey, we put a heavy emphasis on ensuring transparency and security of what happened to our users data.

After the introduction of GDPR

Having designed Pipplet with data in mind, when GDPR took effect on the 25th May 2018, we were internally compliant by design. Unlike some other companies created many years ago, we’ve not had to make any changes and our language test continues to work the same way it did from day 1.

However, although everything Pipplet does internally has always been data compliant, we do rely on some technical partners to help us with activities such as storage, email management etc. The introduction of GDPR has therefore, had a positive impact on the full end-to-end journey, as all of our partners are now GDPR compliant too. We’re able to ensure our data stays in ‘Continental Europe’ and feel completely confident in the security & privacy credentials of these technical partners, thanks to GDPR. Many clients need to be able to prove that the entire process is compliant with the GDPR and we’re happy to be able to help do this.

The future of data at Pipplet

We process hundreds of candidates taking our tests every day. They receive invitations to take the test, their answers are assessed and results are calculated and sent back to our clients. These activities involve emails, data exchanges, and for information to be displayed. I don’t think a digital company like ours can say "It's good, everything is done with personal data, we’ll just put it to the back of our mind". Instead, data protection is an ever changing topic that will continue to evolve, so we must too. Our Data Protection Officer is also our Director of Operations, so he is able to be a champion for our personal data protection agenda, and keeping it at the forefront as we grow as a business.
