Pipplet • 11 mars 2021

The Examiner Corner is a part of a short blog series launched by Pipplet, and it is for you! Get to know the experts behind the Pipplet results report, their expertise, and why they love being a part of and contributing to the Pipplet brand. This is episode 5.

Pipplet remains credible and convenient for businesses and their test-takers, and as a language professional, it highlights the most important areas that highlight overall fluency.

Shang-Wei, a Pipplet examiner with more than 5 years of experience joined our community of linguistic experts in an effort to contribute even greater accuracy and legitimacy to our evaluation. Like all of our linguists, he shares the same passion for language, and a genuine connection with the Pipplet team, which is important in understanding his commitment to his work and overall development.

Shang-Wei, can you tell us a little about why or how languages became a passion of yours?

While I was studying to obtain my bachelor’s degree, I found myself enjoying the idea of learning new languages and teaching my native language to those interested. Thus, I started to participate in language exchange opportunities that supported more possibilities to get others involved in my mission. Since then, my passion for teaching Chinese, improving their Chinese spoken and written comprehension has evolved.

Quick Tipplet 1: When it comes to testing languages, human examiners offer a level of precision and in-depth analysis that AI currently can’t replicate. This is why we carefully recruit and select top language examiners to assess all Pipplet tests and monitor them regularly using mystery candidates to ensure fair, consistent, and reliable results. What do you think makes the Pipplet test special?

Pipplet is unique in that it's instant. But because it is instant does not mean it lacks depth. Pipplet remains credible and convenient for businesses and their test-takers, and as a language professional, it highlights the most important areas that highlight overall fluency. The questions found on the test are in fact practical, a test taker is challenged to respond as if they were in a professional work simulation, so it is a good reference of language skills for professional recruiters and other employers sourcing bilingual or multilingual talent.

Can you walk us through the first thing you do when you receive a new Pipplet test to grade?

The first thing I do is to mark the notification mail from Pipplet, and I will check how much time left for grading it. Then, I make time for grading after my full-time work.

Quick Tipplet 2: We anonymize all test data before it is sent for assessment. And to make sure we give you consistent, reliable, and easy-to-understand results, we use world-renowned CEFR levels when assessing candidates.

What do you enjoy most about working with the Pipplet team?

There are a couple of things I enjoy. The first is the ability to work without any issue, remotely. This is the direct result of their internal communication system and how efficiently they use it to communicate with us.

The second is the professional development aspect. Having the opportunity to increase my exposure to a diverse group of Chinese speakers around the world allows me to improve my technical linguistics skills. For example, knowing how to specifically draw conclusions from listening and reading, tying that to the CEFR scale, and conveying those results in a report.

How has working with Pipplet changed your approach to teaching?

Working with Pipplet has allowed me to improve my sensitivity to learners' language performance. Therefore, I am getting better at evaluating not only the test takers’ strengths and weaknesses but also my students’ skills in the classroom. After that, with an accumulation of experience, I can adjust my teaching approach and ultimately identify what a candidate might need/want to work on in order to advance their language skills. This is not only helpful for test-takers in language learning settings, but also equally for talent acquisition specialists. Recruitment professionals are thus able to gauge how much importance they want to put on the strengths and weaknesses I outline in a full candidate report.

In the end, would you recommend the Pipplet test for corporate recruiters and language learning centers? Why?

Yes. I would highly recommend the Pipplet test to professionals who oversee the recruitment strategy. It’s only a benefit to their operations because Pipplet tests are a practical and quick way to identify language proficiency for new prospective job candidates. Professionals recruiting or sourcing new talent can receive a detailed report with specific analyses in a short time.

Quick Tipplet 3: A candidate receiving a B1 language level score on the CEFR scale can already access certain jobs requiring language skills. For example those in the hospitality sector like hotels or restaurants. These jobs require the ability to interact in a given language, and a B1 candidate would be more than able to communicate and interact with your clients.
